Agencies answer questions in two shapes. A specific answer names a document, a registration, a staff role, or a file you can look up. A general answer says the agency is reliable, caring, or fully covered, and gives you nothing to write down. This guide is about spotting the general answer early, while the family still has time to ask again.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

Log each question and answer word for word

Before any reply is judged, write the question and the answer as they were said or sent. Do not paraphrase. A paraphrase is where the softening happens. Mark each answer as specific or general. A specific answer names something you can check, such as a registration line, a staff role, or a written policy. A general answer names a quality. Log both kinds, because the count of general answers is itself a record.

Ask the same thing twice in different words

The second ask is the test. Pick the one question that matters most to the family, such as who answers when the aide is away, and ask it once in the first conversation and once in the follow-up, in different words. If the second answer names a different person, a different process, or a different day, log it as a shift. A shift is not proof of anything. It is a reason to ask for the written version before the family goes further.

Questions that force a checkable answer

Ask which state or federal registration covers the office that will send the aide. Ask who at the office takes a complaint, under what role, and what happens to it after that. Ask what the written policy says about a missed shift, and ask for the policy in writing. Ask whether the staff member named in the meeting is the person who will sign the plan. Each question should end with something you can hold in your hand or look up.

What to do with a general answer

Do not argue with it. Write it in the log as general, then send the same question in writing and ask for a reply in writing. If the written reply is general again, the file records that too. Editorial note: this guide does not rank agencies, and a general answer is not a finding about any named provider.
