From the file: nothing in this piece comes from a public record. It is a method for reading your own calendar. Editorial: the sign that help is needed often sits in the family's own week, not in a search result.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

Start with the week, not the search

Before you compare agencies, write out one full week hour by hour. Include work hours, school runs, store trips, calls that have to be answered, and nights when someone is awake. Mark each block with the name of the person covering it.

Read the marks

Look for three things: blocks with the same name every time, days with no break at all, and blocks nobody has written down. Each one is a place where the plan depends on one person being available. That dependence is the problem to name before you ask any agency for help.

Name what the help must cover

Some families need an hour of company. Others need a block of hands-on help. Others need cover while the main person is away. Write the need in plain words. A line such as a weekend morning when the main person is out of town gives an agency far more to work with than more help. Health questions go to the family's doctor, not to the calendar.

Ask these questions of the week

  • Has the family member who covers the most had to cancel their own appointments?
  • Is there any stretch of the week when the family cannot leave the house?
  • Do the night calls go to the same person every time?
  • Would one missed block cause the whole plan to fail?

If the answers point to hours without relief, the calendar has already shown that the plan is short. Editorial: a family may still decide not to hire anyone, but the written week makes that decision visible.

Before you decide which kind of help fits, read home health versus non-medical home care: which record to check. It sorts the two categories so the search starts in the right place.
